How to apply a face serum?

Sommaire

A good serum can transform the appearance of the skin... provided it is applied correctly. The application method is as important as the formula: a few simple habits are enough to get the most out of this concentrated treatment and boost your entire beauty routine.

Why is serum application crucial?

Serum is a highly concentrated active ingredient treatment. Even with a high-performance formula, improper application on the face significantly reduces its effectiveness. The application method is as important as the product.

Its light and fluid texture promotes rapid absorption, but this deep penetration depends on 3 key factors related to the skincare routine.

1. Order in the routine
Serum should always be used on clean skin, right after cleansing and before moisturizer. If applied after moisturizer, it won't penetrate properly.
👉 Serum treats, cream seals.

2. Quantity used
A few drops are enough.

  • Too little: targeted action (anti-aging, hydration, radiance, imperfections) remains limited.
  • Too much: the skin becomes saturated, especially sensitive or oily skin.
A small amount evenly distributed improves the serum's effectiveness without overloading the epidermis.

3. Application gestures
Tapping, smoothing, and gently massaging from the center outwards promotes the diffusion of active ingredients (hyaluronic acid, vitamins, retinol, etc.) deep into the skin cells.
These movements stimulate the skin, support radiance, and help reduce wrinkles, fine lines, spots, or signs of fatigue.

Serum acts as a true booster: it prepares the skin, targets a specific problem (wrinkles, dull complexion, imperfections, dehydration), and visibly improves the results of subsequent treatments. When applied correctly, a suitable serum helps the skin regain a radiant complexion, a smoother appearance, and a lasting feeling of comfort, regardless of skin type.

When to apply a face serum?

Morning, evening, or both?

  • In the morning
Serum helps protect the skin from external aggressions, revive radiance, and prepare the complexion. Hydrating, antioxidant, or vitamin C formulas are ideal.
  • In the evening
The skin enters a phase of cellular regeneration. Anti-aging, anti-blemish, or repairing serums work more deeply during the night.

👉 A serum can be used morning and evening, or be different depending on the time of day.

Before or after moisturizer?

Always before moisturizer.
Serum treats, cream protects. Cream forms a hydrolipidic film that seals in hydration and prevents active ingredients from evaporating.

After cleansing (and exfoliation)

Clean skin absorbs active ingredients better.
Cleansing is therefore an essential step.

How to apply a face serum: the 7 key steps

Step 1: Gently cleanse the skin

Use a gentle cleanser adapted to your skin type. The skin should be clean and free of impurities.

Step 2: Exfoliate if necessary (without excess)

Gentle exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells.

Good to know:
Garancia's Pschitt Magique can be used daily, unlike classic exfoliants which are limited to 1 or 2 uses per week. It smooths the skin's surface and promotes better serum penetration, without irritating the skin.

Step 3: Take the right amount

  • 3 to 5 drops (or a pea-sized amount if the texture is rich) are sufficient: it is a highly concentrated product.
  • Avoid applying the pipette directly to the skin (for hygiene, preservation, and effectiveness).

A small amount evenly distributed over the face and eye contour (if the serum is suitable) often gives better results than an overdose.

Step 4: Warm the serum between your hands

Spread the serum between your palms for 5–10 seconds, using circular movements. In one minute, the texture becomes more pliable: diffusion is better, application is more pleasant, and the boosting effect on hydration and radiance is enhanced.

Step 5: Apply from the center outwards

Apply your serum to your face, then neck and décolleté, with smoothing, upward motions. Gently tap or press with your fingertips rather than rubbing: this stimulates blood circulation, helps the skin absorb, and supports a youthful appearance (wrinkles and sagging).

Step 6: Focus on targeted areas

Gently tap on:

  • wrinkles and fine lines
  • spots
  • visible pores
  • redness or imperfections

These areas benefit from more intense targeted action.

Step 7: Seal with a suitable cream

The cream finalizes the routine and protects the skin.

How much serum should I use?

This is a frequent, yet decisive, question.

  • Too little: active ingredients do not work fully
  • Too much: skin becomes saturated, product is wasted

👉 Adjust the quantity according to:

  • the texture (fluid, oil, dual-phase)
  • the area (face only or face + neck + décolleté)

In most cases, a few drops are enough.

Should application be adapted according to the type of serum?

Hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid)

  • Apply to slightly damp skin
  • Enveloping gestures to retain water in the epidermis

Vitamin C / radiance serum

  • Preferably use in the morning
  • Avoid the eye contour if the formula is not specifically designed for it

Global anti-aging serum

  • More intense massage
  • Upward movements to stimulate circulation and firmness

Anti-blemish serum

  • Can be applied in a targeted manner
  • Avoid overdosing to prevent skin sensitization

Mistakes to avoid when applying serum

  • Applying serum after cream
  • Using too much
  • Layering several serums illogically
  • Forgetting the neck and décolleté
  • Changing serums too often without giving them time to work

A serum yields real results when used regularly, as part of a coherent routine.
